  1.                       The Quotes 2 Echo Rules

  4. TOPIC:  The Quotes 2 echo area is for the sharing of quoteable material.
  5. ------  This has also been expanded to include Puns, and short stories,
  6.         otherwise known as Observations ala Will Rogers, J. Frank Dobie
  7.         and others... Discussions of Quotes, Puns, or Observations
  8.         should be kept to a minimum, but use common sense in that
  9.         respect. In other words, requests for qoutes, info on who
  10.         may have been quoted and similar items of this nature.
  11.         Discussion's on the content of the quote are best directed
  12.         to the Quotes_Discussions echo. (yes Binky, a new area)

  15. RULES:  The rules for the Quotes 2 Echo are simple, very standard and
  16. ------  may be bent a little, but not ignored.
  17.  
  18.        1.  Keep your messages on-topic as described above --
  19.            Any other content is inappropriate.  On occasion, the
  20.            Moderator may get the feeling that message content is
  21.            inappropriate or has the potential to attract a barrage
  22.            of inappropriate messages.  In addition, some threads
  23.            may be more appropriate on other echo conferences, such
  24.            as the new Quotes_Discussions message area.
  25.            In such instances, the Moderator will post a friendly
  26.            reminder of these "guidelines".
  27.  
  28.        2.  Be NICE to one another and keep your sense of humor --
  29.            Personal attacks against people whose opinions
  30.            differ from yours are not permitted.
  31.            The useful exchange of information requires you to accept
  32.            that people have opinions or experiences which contrast yours.
  33.            The object of this echo is to enjoy quotes from others,
  34.            not to argue with them about their quotes.
  35.            Profanity is out of place and certainly is not necessary.
  36.            Although there are those "risque" sayings, let's keep them
  37.            to a minimum... Various Limericks come to mind...
  38.            Any personal attack (thinly disguised or not) is inappropriate.

  40.        3.  Never use the echo to reply to inappropriate messages --
  41.            No letters home to Mom and Dad asking for money...
  42.            If you feel a message is inappropriate, simply take
  43.            a deep breath and please ignore it.
  44.            It'll go away. And if it doesn't,
  45.            LET THE MODERATOR HANDLE THE PROBLEM!!!
  46.            If you respond over the echo, many Sysops will incur
  47.            financial expense for your violation.
  48.            If you feel particularly strong about a specific posting,
  49.            YOU assume financial responsibility by sending the
  50.            Moderator private netmail, or by taking your beef
  51.            off-echo and flame the person directly.
  52.            Leave the other participants out of it, especially the
  53.            Sysops who foot the bills.
  54.  
  55.        4.  Avoid entering private or local-interest messages --
  56.            One exception may be the posting of up-coming events that
  57.            may have an impact on the Quotes and Puns area.
  58.            The O Henry Pun Off or events similar can be mentioned.
  59.            Messages which cannot be of interest other conference
  60.            participants are inappropriate and should be sent via NetMail.
  61.            Contact your SysOp on the BBS you are calling from, in the
  62.            General Msg Area or a special area for messages to/from the SysOp,
  63.            not in this Echo! for information on that board's NetMail policy.

  66.        5.  Do not initiate any commercial advertisements or BBS ads --
  67.            Such postings are inappropriate.  Note, however, that this
  68.            does not forbid messages about specific products, services,
  69.            or BBS phone numbers in direct response to request
  70.            for information having to do with Quotes or Puns.

  72. HANDLES:
  73. --------   While not encouraged, "handles" or anonymous names are
  74.            permitted provided they are not used with the intent to
  75.            conceal the identity of a person posting malicious or
  76.            illegal messages.
  77.  
  78. COPYRIGHTED MATERIAL:
  79. ---------------------
  80.            The posting of copyrighted material without the
  81.            express permission of the copyright holder may violate any
  82.            "fair-use" doctrine.  Quoting a passage is acceptable,
  83.            especially if other sources are quoted as well.

  85.            Posting a single article verbatim without permission
  86.            is not acceptable. (That creeps into the realm of plagiarism.)
  87.            And really does not have a place in this particular message area.
  88.            Any notice that it has been posted without permission
  89.            doesn't protect any BBS carrying this echo from possible
  90.            prosecution.  Sysops, if you feel uncomfortable about
  91.            messages containing copyrighted material, it is acceptable
  92.            to delete them from your board.
  93.            On occasion, the Moderator will place long distance calls
  94.            to the copyright holder to verify permission.
  95.  
  96. SYSOP RESPONSIBILITY:
  97. ---------------------
  98.            Sysops who receive the Quotes 2 Echo are responsible
  99.            for all messages which enter this conference from
  100.            their systems.  This includes messages from users
  101.            of the system and any points.  All messages must have a
  102.            FidoNet compatible Origin line which should contain the
  103.            BBS's name.  In addition, it is recommended that the
  104.            Origin line contain the city and state code.
  105.            The line must end with a legal (i.e., listed
  106.            in a nodelist) Net/node address.  If the Net/node is
  107.            not a FidoNet number, then the network (AlterNet,
  108.            FamilyNet, EggNet etc.) should be identified in the Origin
  109.            line text so NetMail replies can be properly routed.
  110.            In addition, please post these rules so that your users can
  111.            read them BEFORE they begin participation in this conference.
  112.            If you have been contacted by the Moderator regarding use
  113.            or abuse of the Quotes 2 Echo from your board, you are
  114.            expected to respond promptly via netmail to 1:382/98.0
  115.            if requested to do so.
  116.  
  117. NONCOMPLIANCE:
  118. --------------
  119.            If you cannot abide by and comply with the rules, you
  120.            are requested to forego posting messages to this conference.
  121.            Sysops, do not allow your users to post inappropriate
  122.            or abusive messages in this conference.  Anyone who
  123.            posts such messages will be warned of the infraction.
  124.            If inappropriate posting continues, you, as the SysOp,
  125.            will be asked to drop the conference.
  126.            If you do not drop the conference voluntarily, the system(s)
  127.            uproute will be asked to disconnect your Quotes 2 Echo feed.
  128.            This method of keeping the Quotes 2 Echo interesting and
  129.            productive is not preferred.  It is preferable that
  130.            participants simply abide by the rules.
